What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd?
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a method for the religious education of children with presentations based on the Sacred Scripture, liturgy and the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori. This method developed through the work of Sophia Cavaletti with children themselves. It is based on the conviction that God and the child are already in a relationship; the task before us is to help the child deepen that relationship. This particular method of catechesis is well suited to the needs and capacities of the young child.
What is an atrium?
An atrium is a carefully prepared environment where great truths about our faith are placed before the children to satisfy their spiritual needs in age-appropriate ways. Parents are welcome to sit in on their child’s class at any time. Holy Spirit Parish is home to two (almost three) atria that serve 175 young parishioners, ages 3-12.
How are CGS catechists trained?
CGS catechists receive a lot of training before leading a CGS class. Catechists find their own spiritual life grows as well as the spiritual lives of the children they serve. If you are interested in becoming a catechist, please contact Maureen Leach.
Volunteers willing to assist the Catechists are needed; this is a great way to be introduced to the methods of CGS.

- Children must be 3 ½ years old by September 1st to enroll in CGS
- Classes are from September through April
- Sacramental (First Reconciliation/First Communion) prep is available in the Level II class
- Since class sizes are limited, priority will be given to Holy Spirit parishioners.
Registration Fees
- One Child - $100
- Two Children - $150
- Three Children - $200
Sacrament Fees
First Reconciliation/First Communion - $40

Wednesdays 6:05-7:30 PM
Level 1 (3-6 year olds) - FULL
Level 2 (6-9 year-olds) - FULL
Level 3 (9-12 year olds) - FULL
Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30
Level 1 & Level 2 (3-6 & 6-9-year-olds) FULL
Please fill out the registration form below. Filling out the registration form will not guarantee your enrollment. Due to limited space, priority will be given to Holy Spirit parishioners, and we will process in the order the registrations are received.
Once reviewed, you will receive an e-mail from Holy Spirit on or before August 9, 2023, with confirmation and a link for payment. You will need to pay via PayPal or cash/check to the office within one week to hold your spot.
If you need to register more than three children, you can fill out the form again, and we will be sure all of your children are placed at the same time if space if available.
Please Note:
Sessions fill up quickly with the intention of keeping sessions small to allow for space for children to listen, work and pray in rooms specifically designed for the children, called atriums. CGS is directed by trained CGS catechists, which traditionally requires a significant amount of dedication and time, which limits the ability to offer sessions!
